Boeing 707-436 (B.O.A.C.)

La British Overseas Airways Corporation a été constituée en 1939 et devint opérationnelle en 1940. Ses premières années furent passées au service des militaires et ce n'est qu'après la guerre qu'elle fut en service commercial.

Vickers VC-10Elle fut une des rares compagnies volant avec des Vickers VC-10.
En fusionnant avec British Europen Airways (BEA) en 1976, elle devint la British Airways.

The British Overseas Airways Corporation was created in 1939 and became operational en 1940. For the first six years it was in military service. It was only after war that it entered commercial service.
It was one of the rare airlines to fly the Vickers VC-10.
After a merger with British Europen Airways (BEA) in 1976, it became British Airways.

Air France a été créée en 1933 en fusionnant plusieurs compagnies dont l'aéropostale, successeur de Latécoère la première compagnie commerciale au monde (1918).
Air France a toujours fait preuve d'avant-gardisme et employa dès 1953 le premier avion turbopropulsé, le Vickers Viscount. Elle fut aussi la première a utiliser le tout premier jet commercial avec moteurs de queue : la Caravelle. Elle fut l'une des deux seules compagnies au monde avec British Airways à voler avec le Concorde.

Air France was created in 1933 after a fusion of major French airlines which included the Aéropostale, successor to Latécoère, the world's first commercial airline.
Air France was always at the "avant-garde" of the airliner scene. It used the world's first turboprop airliner in 1953 the Vickers Viscount. It was also the first to fly the first rear engined jetliner : the Caravelle. It was the only airliner, with British Airways, to fly the Concorde.

Boeing 720-048 (Irish International - Aer Lingus)

Aer Lingus fut créée en 1936 sous le nom d'Aer Lingus Téoranta (Air Fleets Ltd.). Au début, elle opéra sous le nom d'Irish Sea Airways. En 1937 fut créée Aer Rianta Téoranta pour assurer le service européen. En 1947, une filiale, Aerlinte Eirann Téoranta assura les vols intercontinentaux. Les deux volérent aussi sous les couleurs d'Aer Lingus - Irish. En 1960, les activités furent regroupées sous le nom d'Aer Lingus - Irish International. Aer Lingus fut une des rares compagnies à utiliser des Boeing 720, proches cousins du 707. Aer Lingus was created in 1936 under the name Aer Lingus Teoranta (Air Fleets Ltd.). At first in flew under the name Irish Sea Airways. In 1937, Aer Rianta Téoranta was created to fly routes to Europe. In 1947, a subsidiary, Aerlinte Eirann Teoranta flew the intercontinental routes. Both flew under Aer Lingus - Irish. In 1960, the activities of both were regrouped under Aer Lingus - Irish International. Aer Lingus was one of the rare companies to fly the Boeing 720, a derivative of the 707.

The Koninklijke Luchtvaart Maatschapij (KLM), created in 1919, is the oldest company still flying with its original name. "Flying Dutchman" and "Royal Dutch Airlines" were also painted on planes over the years.

La Scandinavian Airlines System est issue de la fusion de trois compagnies en 1946. SAS avait utilisé les DC-4 et DC-6 de Douglas. Le choix d'un avion à réaction se porta facilement vers Douglas et ses DC-8. SAS a opéré un Hovercraft (AP 1-88) entre l'aéroport de Copenhague et le terminal de Malmö. Elle constitue une des rares compagnies à être issue de trois pays différents (Suède, Norvège, Danemark).

The Scandinavian Airlines System was formed in 1946 by merging three companies. SAS had used Douglas DC-4s et DC-6s. The DC-8 was thus a natural choice for the company. SAS has opreated a Hovercraft (AP 1-88) between Copenhague Airport and Malmö terminal. It is one of the rare success story for a company coming from more than a single country (Sweden, Norway, Danemark).

Swissair a été créée en 1931 avec la fusion de Balair et Ad Atra Aero. On voit ici un de ses DC-10 (à gauche) et un de ses DC-8 (ci-dessous) utilisés dans les années 70.

La société Queensland And Northern Territories Aerial Services Ltd. (Qantas) fut fondée en 1920. On dit en Europe et dans les Amériques que c'est la compagnie du bout du monde. Il faut dire que pour un Australien, Paris ou New-York n'est pas à la porte... Queensland And Northern Territories Aerial Services Ltd. (Qantas) was created in 1920. In Europe or in the Americas, it is said that Quantas is the Airline from the end of the world. One must admit that for an Australian, Paris or New-York isn't exactly near either...

DC-8 (Philippines Air Lines)

Philippines Airlines fut créée en 1941. Comme SAS, cette compagnie utilisa plusieurs types d'avions Douglas comme ce DC-8. Elle fut une des premières compagnies aérienne dans le Pacifique.

Created in 1941, this company was (like SAS) a user of Douglas aircraft (DC-8 shown above). It was one of the first airline in the Pacific.

La Deutsche Luft Hansa est née le 6 avril 1926. Ses opérations furent arrêtées à la fin de la seconde guerre mondiale mais elles purent reprendre en 1954 sous son nom de Lufthansa.

The Deutsche Luft Hansa was created on April 6th 1926. Its operations were suspended at the end of the second world war. Lufthansa was in the air again in 1954.

Aerolinee Italiane Internazionali (Alitalia) fut créée le 16 septembre 1946. Lorsqu'elle se dota d'avions à réaction, elle devint un des principaux acheteurs européens de Douglas.  Alitalia billet Aerolinee Italiane Internazionali (Alitalia) was created on September 16th 1946. It became one of Douglas principal european buyer when it decided to go with jet airliners.
