July 24th 2000 Week 4 of our follow-up of the building of a Pelican Sport from Ultravia Aero International Inc. |
Here is the left wing mounted on the assembly jig built this week.
To build this jig, they had to dismantle the table on which the horizontal stabilizer and the elevators were put last week.
The jig is made of metal beams. Luc and Christian preferred metal because the system must be rigorously straigth and at right angles and the beams must be at an exact distance one to another.
Wood is a material that even when dry can easely become warped. If wood was utilized, frequent adjustments would have been mandatory to prevent the wing itself becoming warped during assembly.
The beam in the rear is solidly fixed to the floor and the ceiling in Christian's workshop.
The vertical beam in front could not be screwed to the ceiling. The garage door must be rolled up near the ceiling.
In order to maintain this front beam in place, an horizontal beam was positionned on the wall of the workshop. The vertical beam could then be solidly anchored to it.
Work will begin on the left wing for now. Different componants will be installed such as the fuel reservoirs mentionned last week).
